The 5 best ways to get around Bangkok 2022

Aktualisiert: 15. Sept. 2022

Bangkok is one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the world. With 20 million tourists annually, it is the most visited city in the world. When you first arrive, you will quickly notice the traffic problem. There are times when it is almost impossible to get around. Therefore, it is essential to know which transport options you can use.

How do you get from A to B in Bangkok? We will show you all the means of transport!

Taxis

Transport in Bangkok is mainly by taxi. They come in different colours, although these only stand for various companies and the yellow-green ones are independent drivers. There is no difference in price.

Be sure to orient yourself before getting into a taxi by facing the right direction to your destination. Otherwise, you may have to drive a long time to the next U-turn and spend a lot of money unnecessarily.

You can recognize a free taxi by the red lettering in the window and call it by hand signal.

If your driver wants to use the paid expressway, he will usually ask you first. After that, you must pay the fee either at the counter or at the end of the journey.

You will find the name of your hotel on its business card, so be sure to take one with you if this is the case.

For even more convenience, use the apps inDriver and Grab. Read more about valuable apps during your trip here.

Let's move on to the price. You must be prepared for negotiations and scams if you don't use one of the two suggested apps. Now, it's safest to get in only with taxi drivers who use taximeters. When you start, ensure the meter is switched on and only shows a small starting fee of about €1.

Bus

Taking a bus is the cheapest form of transport in Bangkok and not as complicated as it looks.

Using the Google Maps app, you can enter your current location and your desired destination, then click on the bus icon and the next bus stop. Google Maps will display the number of available buses and the route. As soon as you want to get off, you have to give the bus driver a sign. Only then will he stop at the bus stop.

On the homepage of the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, you will find a list of tourist destinations and available bus routes.

Sky Train

The Sky Train is always the fastest mode of transport in Bangkok. Unfortunately, the network is small, and you will rarely be able to use it to get directly to your destination. However, if you get the opportunity to shorten your journey with a ride, we advise you to take it. Over the streets of Bangkok, you can see the city from a different perspective.

Tuk Tuk

One of the landmarks of Bangkok is the small pimped-out Tuk Tuks with their usually cheerful drivers and blaring music boxes. We also recommend you take a ride here, but this is enough. They are much more expensive than taxis, as most of them are only used by tourists. In addition, they sometimes drive very fast, so they are not the safest means of transport, and you breathe in all the exhaust fumes.

We recommend switching to the taxi motorbike if you want to get around quickly.

Flussfähre

The Chao Phraya Express boat is probably Bangkok's most beautiful means of transport. As with the Sky Train, we recommend using the small ferries whenever convenient. Many stops are near tourist attractions.
