The 5 most important temples on Koh Samui 2022

Aktualisiert: 14. Sept. 2022

Koh Samui offers a temple tour. We present the most important and largest ones. Please remember to dress appropriately. A basic rule is to cover your shoulders and legs. You can usually borrow clothes for free on-site if you are already on your way.

Big Buddha

Let's start with the most famous temple on Koh Samui. The sitting Big Buddha was built in 1972 on the Ko Fan peninsula and carries a wheel of life and dragon ornaments on its back. Even when you get close to it, you can guess how big it is. Seeing it up close, however, is another matter.

Wat Plai Laem

Wat Plai Laem is probably the island's second most famous temple complex. It is built into a lake with thousands of fish and turtles (you can even feed them for 10 baht). In the middle of the lake, a large temple, a laughing Buddha and the goddess Guanyin await you.

Wat Khunaram

Also known as Phra Wihan Luang Por Daeng, this temple is located near Lamai Beach and quickly gained notoriety because a mummified monk is sitting in it. He sits to this day in a glass box decorated with flowers, candles, and incense sticks. For locals, this is a place of devotion to life after death.

Wat Ratchathammaram (Red temple)

During one of our scooter tours, we came across a red temple. Wat Ratchathammaram is near Lamai Beach. It will catch your eye as its terracotta colour is a beautiful sight. Especially the exterior details caught our attention, and the interior is even more attractive. A clear recommendation!

Guan Yu Shrine

Let's move on to the last stop on our temple tour. The Chinese Guan Yu Shrine contains a 16-meter-high bronze statue of Guan Yu. He was a Chinese general. The place is meant to be the Chinatown of Koh Samui and attracts many tourists. The design and details are refreshing after visiting the wats.

After an exhausting temple tour, it's time to relax. But, first, we introduce you to the six best beaches on Koh Samui.
